SAATHII E-Training

BIOSTATISTICS AND RESEARCH METHODS, APRIL- MAY 2006

Included in SAATHII's Capacity-Building Initiative is our mandate to enhance the in-house data analytic and research capabilities of non-government and government organizations working on HIV/AIDS in India. We have been offering on-the-ground training courses in biostatistics and research methods begining August 2004, and are launching the first course to be electronically delivered using a combination of email, web uploads and chat sessions for live-discussion with the course instructor.

The module set is the first of a two-part series, with the second set covering monitoring and evaluation.

The Biostatistics and Research Methods course includes 14 modules of PowerPoint (TM) presentations covering Data Basics, Study Designs, Descriptive Statistics, Sampling, Basic Probability, Sampling Distributions and Confidence Intervals, Hypothesis Testing, Comparison of Means (paired and unpaired), power and sample size, Analysis of Variance and Simple Linear Regression. There will be a test following each module, which is to be completed and emailed to the instructor.

The course has been developed by a staff-volunteer team consisting of Dr. L. Ramakrishnan of SAATHII's Chennai office and Mr. Edward Broughton from the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. An earlier version of this course was piloted in August 2004 at Chennai.

Expected time of completion: 5 weeks, with lecture modules sent out approximately every alternate day depending on length.

Course Instructor: L. Ramakrishnan, Country Director (Programs and Research, SAATHII)

Course Fees: None, at this time.

Participant eligibility:

  • Individuals with work experience in the HIV/AIDS service provision or monitoring/evaluation sectors.
  • Owing to the limited enrollment (50 students per course) preference will be given to students working in rural and semi-urban locations in India, who would otherwise find it difficult to access training programs.
  • Prior exposure to Microsoft Office (TM) software such as Excel, Word and Powerpoint. Grasp of written and spoken English.

Computer requirements: PC with MS Office installed, and internet access (dial-up will suffice).

To enroll:
