The Second National AIDS Control Programme (NACP II), managed by Government of India (GoI) National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), began in 1999 and has been extended to March 2007. NACP II has five components:
* interventions for high-risk communities
* prevention amongst the general population
* low cost care and support
* strengthening capacity, and
* inter-sectoral collaboration.
The goal of DFID support to NACP II is to reduce the spread of HIV infection and its impact on poverty in India. More details on the programme may be viewed at the website, External Linkhttp://www.naco.nic.in Most behaviour change interventions focused on HIV/AIDS in India are message based. There exists in many states with extremely vulnerable groups present that do not receive sufficient information to make informed and sustained behavioural choices regarding their sexual behaviour. Objective of this assignment is to strengthen dialogue based IPC at a community level in media dark areas using existing community level workers. The expected Outputs are a) to strengthen the capacity of community level health workers to inform and counsel key communities regarding prevention skills and knowledge, understanding of treatment regimes, ability to access services and products and motivation for HIV/STI prevention and treatment; b) orient health managers and decision makers to dialogue based IPC approaches; and c) to strengthen State Aids Control Societies (SACS) capacity to implement IPC strategies.
